The Denver Post prep staff looks at Saturday’s action in football playoffs:
CLASS 5A
Powers roll
Matt Tucker threw four touchdown passes, two in the first five minutes Saturday, as defending Class 5A champion Grandview rolled past East 48-20 in the second round of the postseason.
Tucker passed for 192 yards for the Wolves, now 11-0 and winners of 22 games in a row.
Mullen, which has reached at least the semifinals the past five seasons, got a step closer to a sixth with a 38-17 whipping of Chaparral. Donovan Bowens’ two touchdowns paced Pomona over Chatfield 28-3, and Cherry Creek rocked Bear Creek 42-21.
CLASS 4A
Seeds growing
Few surprises occurred in 4A’s first round as Greeley West, the Northern champion, handled Littleton 37-14.
Montrose nipped Niwot 21-14, and Longmont beat Monarch 28-14 as Jake Johnson passed and ran for 300 yards and four touchdowns.
CLASS 3A
Jags cut Palisade
D’Evelyn went into the mountains and knocked off host Palisade 30-28. The 11th-seeded Jaguars are 10-1.
Plus, seventh-seed Summit won at (10) Cañon City 17-3.
Elsewhere, the higher seeds cruised — Pueblo County beat up on Steamboat Springs 44-14, Fort Morgan took down Elizabeth 32-0, and Glenwood Springs whipped Roosevelt 52-10.
CLASS 2A
Huskies dominate
In cold, windy Bailey, Platte Canyon blew Holy Family off the ball quickly. The top-seeded Huskies (11-0) opened the first round with 27 consecutive points in eliminating the Tigers 40-19 for the second year in a row.
In a rematch of the 2007 state semifinals, the Huskies got four touchdowns — two in the air and two on the ground — from sophomore quarterback Michael Clark, who also threw an interception.
While Brush rolled Grand Valley 34-0, Olathe crushed Buena Vista 55-10 and Florence downed Aspen 36-13, there were two nail-biters — Erie edged Platte Valley, the defending champion, 16-14, and Kent Denver, behind Tyler Jackson’s five touchdowns, outlasted Eaton 39-35.
CLASS 1A
Wray downs Limon
By identical 34-20 scores, Yuma beat Hotchkiss and Wray eliminated Limon in the quarterfinals. Akron, the two-time state champion, beat up on Calhan 35-0, and Rye pummeled Lyons 45-10.
8-MAN, 6-MAN
Heavies progress
Not many surprises — it will be Dayspring Christian-Hoehne and Merino-Caliche in next weekend’s 8-man semifinals; and Hi-Plains will be at Idalia in the 6-man finale.
