FORT COLLINS, Colo.—A Colorado State University spokesman says President Larry Penley’s former chief of staff has voluntarily terminated his contract with the university, with no payments due.

The move by John Lincoln came two days after Penley said he was resigning and a day after the university’s governing board said it would look into Lincoln’s consulting contract.

Lincoln had retired from the university last week, but Penley then hired him on a contract worth up to $10,000 a month as a public affairs adviser. Lincoln terminated the contract Friday.

Penley and Lincoln had worked together at Arizona State University.

In his resignation letter from CSU, Penley said he wanted to pursue other leadership positions in higher education.
