LINCOLN, Neb.—The Nebraska corn crop is expected to be the second-highest on record at 1.38 billion bushels.
The latest federal estimate says Nebraska’s corn crop will come in 7 percent under last year’s record harvest of 1.47 billion bushels.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture crop report was released Monday and was based on Nov. 1 conditions.
The yield estimate was 161 bushels per acre, the second-highest on record and 5 bushels below the record set in 2004.
The Nebraska area harvested for corn was 8.55 million acres, which the USDA said was down 7 percent from last year.
Nebraska’s soybean crop will come in at an estimated 223 million bushels, which is 14 percent higher than last year. The USDA said the yield forecast was 46 bushels an acre, 5 bushels below the record set in 2007.
Sorghum production was forecast to be the third-highest on record at 223 million bushels. That’s 19 percent below a year ago. The yield was forecast at 87 bushels an acre, which is 11 bushels under last year.
The USDA said the Nebraska production of sugar beets was down 20 percent from last year, mostly because fewer acres were planted for harvest.
And the department said potato production was forecast at 7.9 million hundredweight, which is 4 percent less than a year ago.
