Four schools in the Cherry Creek district were secured this morning after some students reported seeing a group of boys carrying handguns.
Arapahoe County sheriff’s deputies who responded took eight high-school-age boys into custody, said district spokeswoman Tustin Amole. No weapons were found on the boys, she added.
The outer doors at Thunder Ridge Middle School, Eaglecrest High, and Antelope Ridge and Timberline elementary schools were locked after middle-school students reported what they had seen.
“These are kids who the principal believes have high credibility,” Amole said. “Obviously, we want to err on the side of caution.”
After it was determined there was no threat, a normal school day resumed.
One student was cited for having marijuana, and one student was taken into custody as a runaway. The other six were returned to school and their parents were notified that they had been truant, Amole said.
A letter was sent home to parents explaining the incident.
Sheriff Grayson Robinson didn’t immediately return a call.
