CRAIG, Colo.—A Moffat County rancher convicted of illegally killing elk on his property is appealing his case, putting his 60-day jail sentence on hold.
Forty-one-year-old Rodney Culverwell was sentenced last week to jail time, two years of probation and $16,440 for willful destruction of big game and other charges. District Judge Michael O’Hara put the jail sentence, fees and 196 days of community service on hold until the Colorado Court of Appeals considers the case.
The charges stemmed from a Colorado Division of Wildlife investigation last winter, when officers reported finding 18 dead elk on the rancher’s land. Culverwell was convicted of killing only four of the elk. He said he shot them because they were caught in his fence.
