In Sunday’s season finale in Homestead, Fla., Stewart will make his final start in Joe Gibbs Racing’s No. 20, ending a 10-year run that saw him win rookie of the year in 1999 and championships in 2002 and 2005. He won 33 times in 356 races with the team. “I’ve tried to not think about it,” Stewart said of his final race with Gibbs. “This is the longest relationship I’ve ever had with any car owner, so that’s why this situation is so different than anything else I’ve ever dealt with.”
Next year Stewart will be a driver/owner for Stewart-Haas Racing.
“There’s not really going to be an offseason,” Stewart said of his new team. “We’re going to work from Monday after Homestead all the way through until we get to Daytona.”
