Fort Lewis got a goal from Jamie Cunningham and clutch goalkeeping from Zane Wells and beat Metro State 1-0 on Thursday in an NCAA Division II Tournament first-round soccer game in Wichita Falls, Texas.
Cunningham got the lone goal early in the second half. Wells was tested often late as Metro applied pressure, especially from Ola Sandquist, who just missed on four shots, one of which hit the post. The Skyhawks (18-1-3), ranked No. 2 in the nation, will play regional host Midwestern State, which beat Incarnate Word 2-1 in the second overtime.

CU women’s hoops signs four.
University of Colorado women’s basketball head coach Kathy McConnell-Miller said the four players who signed scholarship offers indicate “the direction our program is headed to be able to keep the best Colorado players home. Chucky, Meagan, Brenna and Melissa can come in and immediately make a difference.”
Chucky’s real name is Janeesa Jeffery, and she’s a 5-foot-10 guard from Sierra High School who was a second-team all-state selection as a junior, averaging 19.2 points and 11.5 rebounds. Brenna Malcolm-Peck and Meagan Malcom-Peck are 6-2 twins who play for Horizon High School after transferring from ThunderRidge after their sophomore years. Brenna averaged 12 points and five rebounds her junior year, while Meagan averaged 13 and eight.

Brotherly love at DU.
The University of Denver men’s basketball team signed three players, including Chase Hallam, a 6-4 guard from Mesquite, Texas, whose brother Travis is a freshman for the Pioneers. They led the Skeeters to a 28-7 record last season.
Also signing were Jefferson Powers, a 6-8 forward from Concord, Calif., powerhouse De La Salle H.S., and Blake Foeman, a 6-7 forward from Cypress Bay H.S. in Weston, Fla. Powers averaged 10.1 points and 4.2 rebounds his junior season. Foeman averaged 11 and nine.
Head coach Joe Scott said the three “are our kind of players. They should fit in our system well and complement the players we currently have. They also will provide more depth for us since we are not losing anyone to graduation after this season.”
