“The Color Purple” may have seemed an odd choice for a Broadway musical, considering the unique challenges of adapting an epistolary novel (and, later, film), but its modest success owes as much to the writing as it does to Oprah Winfrey’s high-profile backing. It plays the Buell Theatre Jan. 7-18. Tickets are on sale 10 a.m. Sunday. ($15-$100, )
