HAMILTON, BERMUDA — An opposition lawmaker in Bermuda is comparing a plan to issue identification cards for guest workers to the mistreatment of Jews in Nazi Germany.
Bob Richards of the United Bermuda Party says the proposal is “repugnant” and could hurt business in the British Atlantic territory by making expatriates feel less welcome.
He says that “pretty soon we are going to be asking guest workers to have armbands with Stars of David on them.” Immigration Minister David Burch wants the ID cards for all foreign workers as a way to crack down on illegal employment, particularly in the construction industry.
Richards criticized the plan on Friday before parliament.
