DENVER—Solar panels are being installed at the Capitol in a project that is expected to pay for itself in energy savings.
Crews on Sunday began installing the photovoltaic panels on the roof of the building. Lieutenant Gov. Barbara O’Brien called the project the continued greening of the Capitol and says it’s a way to save the state money and protect the planet.
State officials say the 10-kilowatt system will create enough power for two homes. The energy created will be used by the building.
Rebates from Xcel Energy will put the price tag for the system at $31,000.
The 113-year-old Colorado Capitol building last month became the nation’s first state capitol honored for energy efficiency.
