Mark Swalley has retired after 27 years coaching Denver Christian football. Just the fourth coach in Crusaders history, Swalley was The Denver Post and Denver Broncos coach of the year in 2003, when the Crusaders won the Class 2A state title. His teams earned six Metropolitan League titles and qualified for the Colorado playoffs 15 times, including a run of 11-of-13. Swalley, an eight-year assistant before taking over in 1982, was a rare principal-head football coach in state ranks and rang up a 184-86 record. “It was just time to pass the torch to somebody else,” Swalley said. Nine-year assistant Troy Vanden Broeke is now in command. Neil H. Devlin, The Denver Post
