NEW YORK — Opera-loving philanthropist Alberto Vilar, who had a home in Beaver Creek, was convicted on fraud charges Wednesday for swindling investors, including the mother of actress Phoebe Cates, out of millions of dollars. Vilar and a business partner poured millions of dollars into risky technology stocks that later crashed, prosecutors said.
Vilar donated $7 million to rebuild a Beaver Creek theater, which was later named the Vilar Performing Arts Center, and contributed $2 million toward revamping the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater in Vail. Vail Valley Foundation president Ceil Folz said the board will discuss whether to keep Vilar’s name on the center when it meets Monday. The Associated Press
