With University of Colorado standout Nikki Marshall going 90 minutes in helping anchor the defense, the U.S. under-20 women’s national soccer team topped France 3-0 in its opening game of the U-20 Women’s World Cup in Chillan, Chile, on Wednesday.
Reserve forward Sydney Leroux scored two goals after entering in the second half to lead the Americans.
DU’s Christensen, Garza, Muuss honored.
Denver’s Kyle Christensen was tabbed the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation soccer player of the year after a vote of the league’s coaches. He was joined by freshman teammate Sam Garza, the newcomer of the year, and coach of the year Bobby Muuss. It was Muuss’ second consecutive coach of the year award.
Christensen, goalkeeper Joe Willis, midfielder Collin Audley, defender Colin Jones and senior midfielder Joey Mathot also represented the Pioneers on the All-MPSF first team.
A benefit to help former ‘Pokes assistant coach.
A benefit and auction for former Wyoming football coach Harvey Patton will be held Friday at the Alice Hardie Stevens Center in Laramie.
Proceeds will go to help Patton, an assistant football coach at Wyoming from 2003 through 2007, recover from injuries suffered in a car accident last year.

The Denver women’s basketball team added two early signees after the players submitted national letters of intent. They are Mullen High School standout Laura Palmere and Sarah Feeney of Bismarck (S.D.) High School.
CU men’s golf team signs two.
The Colorado men’s golf team added two players after they signed national letters of intent. Douglas County’s Derek Fribbs and Paul McConnell of Garland, Texas.
Fribbs, The Denver Post player of the year, won the Class 5A state championship at Air Force Academy’s Eisenhower Blue Course. His cousin is Travis Sandersfeld, a redshirt freshman safety on CU’s football team.
