COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A 53-year-old man who stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death in the parking lot of her Colorado Springs employer has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
A jury on Nov. 3 convicted Earl “Freddy” Mayes of first-degree murder in the death of 42-year-old Kesha Tann. A judge handed down the life sentence Wednesday.
Prosecutors said Mayes rammed the woman’s car in the parking lot of the international media and health care ministry HCJB Global on June 27, 2007. He then pulled Tann from her vehicle and stabbed her repeatedly in front of witnesses in broad daylight.
Mayes was convicted after a two-week trial. Jurors deliberated only about one hour.
Mayes apologized to the victim’s family in court Wednesday, saying “It got out of hand.”
