DENVER—Jordan Schroeder scored two goals and assisted on another, leading top-ranked Minnesota to a 5-2 win over Denver on Friday night.

Ryan Stoa added a goal and two assists as Minnesota improved to 7-0-4. The Gophers remain in first place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association with a 6-0-3 record.

The Pioneers (6-5-1, 4-4-1 WCHA) have now dropped three in a row.

Jay Barriball and Mike Carman also scored for the Gophers, while Alex Kangas stopped 25 shots in goal.

Tyler Bozak and Brian Gifford scored for Denver. The team was 0-for-7 on the power play in the game.

The two teams play again Saturday night.

By reaching the top spot in the rankings this week, the Gophers have now ascended to No. 1 for at least one week in eight of the last nine seasons. The only exception was last year when the team didn’t rank higher than third.

Minnesota struggled with the Pioneers last season, going 4-0-1.
