Dick Vitale’s 30th season at ESPN began last week with the basketball game between Kentucky and North Carolina. “Oh, the reception I got from the Carolina students and fans,” Vitale said. “They chanted my name.” After all these years, he’s the same shrinking violet he’s always been. And, at 69 going on 18, Vitale shows no interest in slowing down. A year ago, his season was interrupted by surgery to his vocal cords. This season he’ll cut back a little on his schedule to rest his voice and on game days limit his talking in order to “save it for when I’m making my living.” The Virginian-Pilot
