As late as Monday, the Denver Rescue Mission thought it would fall short of its goal of 6,000 turkeys for the needy on Thanksgiving, but then “kindness and generosity” stepped in.

As of Wednesday evening, donors had provided 11,000 gobblers. The charity has never before received more than 10,000 turkeys for its Thanksgiving food drive, the mission said.

A full house of nearly 500 turned out for a holiday banquet at the downtown mission Wednesday. In the past about approximately 350 came, the mission said.

Another 500 feasted at The Crossing, the mission’s transitional living and long-term rehabilitation facility.
