Light snow starting falling in downtown Denver Friday night, setting a seasonal stage for the lighting of the annual holiday display on the steps of the Denver City and County Building.

The light, wet snow was getting heavier — not accumulating — as Mayor John Hickenlooper flipped the switch on more than 6,000 lights at about 7 p.m. to climax the Light the Lights ceremony televised by 9News.

Black Friday had dawned sunny and bright, after a threat of Thanksgiving snow for the metro area did not materialize.

After a high of 44 degrees Friday, the National Weather Service had estimated a 30 percent chance of snow Friday night. Less than half an inch of snow would accumulate in town, the weather service said.

Ski resorts got a dose of new snow for holiday skiers. Thirteen inches of fresh powder has fallen at Wolf Creek ski resort over the past 24 hours.

Aspen Mountain reported 6 inches, Snowmass 5, and Beaver Creek 4.

Saturday and Sunday will be partly sunny, with highs in the 40s, and the start of the workweek looks sunny, with highs in the 50s.
