TENERIFE, Canary Islands—Seven-time Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong has downplayed his chances of winning an eighth title at cycling’s most famous race.

Armstrong says he’s been out of competition for three years and hasn’t tested himself against others. He notes if the Tour de France was today, he didn’t think he’d have the power to win.

But the 37-year-old Armstrong says the event is months away, and he still has time to prepare.

Armstrong, who has a hom in Aspen, Colo., is training with his Astana team in the Canary Islands.

He says he won’t battle Alberto Contador, who will try to win a second Tour title, to be team leader.
