Just in time for Christmas, Colorado’s Independent Ethics Commission on Thursday issued more gift ban advice to politicians and public workers: Don’t take discounts meant to influence your decisions.
Those Black Friday sales — and other commercial discounts offered to the shopping populace — are all right by the voter-mandated commission.
So are special rates for all government employees offered by hotels, telephone companies and other groups.
The position statement is meant to give broad advice to officials and employees covered by the Amendment 41 ethics reform, which includes a gift ban.
“A ‘special discount’ refers to a discount that is specifically targeted at a particular government employee or official, or a small group of government employees or officials, where there is potential to influence government action,” the group said.
