1220 E. 2100 S., Salt Lake City, UT 84106, 801-474-0771,
Rates: $49.99-$94.99, depending on length of stay and size of suite. Huge, free parking lot out front.
Stay here if you: need to be close to downtown Salt Lake City or surrounding ski areas. This is conveniently located on the east side of the city. It’s very easy to find off the interstate, but not so close that you hear the highway.
It’s close to: the little shops and coffee shops of its quaint neighborhood, with lots of chain restaurants nearby and grocery stores including Whole Foods, so you can bring back food to prepare or just breakfast to reheat. It’s about 15 minutes from downtown, but feels like a separate village within the city proper.
The rooms are: tidy and efficient. There’s plenty of room to stretch out if you’re staying awhile for business. There’s an easy chair, a small dining area and an efficient kitchen, with all that’s needed for a meal for one or two. Iron and ironing board in every room and a well-lighted work area for visiting business people.
They put all of the money into: location, location, location. The place is nothing special to look at, but once you’re headed to your room and on the back side of the hotel — wow. It backs up to open space, with a stream and walking trails. All you can hear is rushing water, birds and the small sounds of the woodland. You’d never guess from the front of this plain, boxlike structure. There are lots of chairs near the balcony where you can sit and enjoy the peace and quiet.
The bottom line: If you are on business or, like us, away for a weekend, this is a cost-efficient place where you can make your own meals and hide away from the city noises while still being in the city. There are helpful, on-site managers willing to help if you run out of anything. This is not a resort to get away from it all, but if you need to be in Salt Lake, this is a good place to stay.
