COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Two 3rd Brigade Combat Team soldiers who died in Baghdad last month were remembered for their ability to boost morale and brighten their surroundings.

A memorial service for 38-year-old Staff Sgt. Timothy Walker and 21-year-old Spc. Armando De La Paz was held Wednesday at Fort Carson.

Walker, who died in a Nov. 8 bombing, was an 18-year Army veteran combat medic and father of two from Tennessee.

De La Paz, who died in a Nov. 13 vehicle crash, was an artilleryman and three-year Army veteran from California.

Friends said Walker was a family man who was always exceeding his commanders’ expectations. They described De La Paz as a budding leader who enjoyed making people laugh.

The 3,600-soldier 3rd Brigade Combat Team has lost 15 soldiers since deploying to Iraq in 2007. The unit is expected home in February.
