DENVER—U.S. Rep. Marilyn Musgrave is thanking voters, staffers and volunteers who’ve supported her during her three terms in Congress.

In a guest commentary posted on The Denver Post’s Web site on Wednesday, Musgrave said she went to Washington to stand up for limited government, fiscal responsibility and traditional values. She said she stayed true to her core principles but acknowledged her stands may have cost her a fourth term.

Musgrave built a national reputation as an opponent of same-sex marriage and won by narrow margins in 2004 and 2006. She’s kept a low profile since being defeated by Democratic businesswoman Betsy Markey last month.

Musgrave says she hopes the intense interest in the election makes lawmakers more accountable to voters during this troubled time.
