FORT CARSON — A colony of endangered black-footed ferrets may soon be reintroduced to Fort Carson south of Colorado Springs.
The Army said Wednesday that it hopes to work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs to establish a colony on 2,400 acres at the south end of the post in Pueblo County.
The ferrets would come from the zoo, which has been breeding them since 1990. The site was chosen because it has a large colony of prairie dogs, the ferrets’ primary food, and it would be protected from intrusion and development.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has to approve the project. About 1,000 black-footed ferrets are known to live in Western and plains states.
