COLORADO SPRINGS — Gov. Bill Ritter is calling on Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich to step down in the wake of his arrest this week on charges that he put President-elect Barack Obama’s Senate seat up for sale.

Ritter, a former prosecutor, told KOAA-TV during a visit to Pueblo Thursday that he had read the complaint filed against Blagojevich.

Ritter said, “Reading the complaint leads me to believe he should step down. He should absolutely step down.”

Obama on Thursday also called for Blagojevich to resign and insisted that neither he nor members of his staff were involved in any deal with the disgraced governor.

Ritter said Blagojevich should step down to restore confidence to Illinois government and to the governor’s office.

Ritter and Blagojevich are both Democrats.
