DENVER—A 27-year-old man accused of killing a Boulder bodybuilder while trying to steal his car has been convicted of first-degree murder.
Jurors deliberated for about five hours before finding Ryan Barry guilty Friday in the 2006 death of 43-year-old Sergio Libman, an amateur bodybuilder who owned a roofing company in Boulder’s Steelyards neighborhood.
Boulder County District Judge D.D. Mallard immediately sentenced Barry to life in prison without parole.
Barry’s lead attorney, Peter Hedeen, said his client will appeal the verdict.
Authorities say Barry and Alfred Gusman arrived at Libman’s garage on Dec. 18, 2006, posing as car buyers. They then demanded Libman hand over his 2003 Porsche Carrera, listed for sale at more than $60,000. An altercation ensued, and Barry shot Libman.
Authorities say Kimberley Johnson told investigators she drove Gusman and Barry to Boulder the night of the shooting and then drove Barry to Kansas.
She testified Barry told her he had shot Libman. Johnson pleaded guilty to accessory to murder and was sentenced to 10 years of probation.
Gusman testified that he saw Barry shoot Libman, and that Barry ordered him at gunpoint to stab Libman to ensure he was dead.
Gusman pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the case and is serving a 32-year prison term.
