COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on felony assault charges for poking three friends at Falcon High School with a lancet, a medical device used to draw a drop of blood.

Authorities say only one of the three bled.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Lt. Lari Sevene says it was probably a prank, but investigators decided to pursue felony charges because the lancet could be considered a weapon, and because of the threat of cross-contamination among the students.

The boy, whose name wasn’t released, was arrested Friday on three counts of second-degree assault and three counts of reckless endangerment.

Authorities say he may also face a theft charge because the lancet was taken from his mother’s workplace.

Falcon is just northeast of Colorado Springs.
