LOVELAND, Colo.—Democrat Betsy Markey hasn’t even taken office yet as congresswoman for the 4th District, but already she has a named challenger.

Republican Tom Lucero of Loveland has filed papers with elections officials declaring his intent to run against Markey in 2010. The seat is on the minds of Republicans because the GOP held it for more than three decades before Markey edged a three-term conservative, Republican Marilyn Musgrave.

Lucero is currently one of nine members of the University of Colorado Board of Regents. Lucero says the 4th District is conservative and that he expects more than one opponent in the GOP primary in two years.

So far, he is the only Republican who has filed his candidacy.
