It took some time before Jerry Gallegos found out for certain what had been racing around beneath the Antero Reservoir ice with his pink ice jig in its mouth on a Dec. 6 outing. It seemed to take even longer before he figured out how to get it through the hole.
“We tried everything to get it out,” the Lakewood resident said. “Then some guys came over with a gaff.”
What finally flopped up into daylight was a 13-pound rainbow trout, a holdover from Antero’s good old days before the 2007-08 winter mortality that killed a vast majority of the biggest fish.
The thing that didn’t take long was Gallegos’ decision what to do with the monster. “It’s already at the taxidermist,” he said.
