Getting your player ready...

FORT COLLINS — Redshirt freshman quarterback Klay Kubiak was wearing a shoulder harness at Colorado State’s practice Saturday while the other young quarterbacks were getting more than their usual work.

In something of a surprise, CSU coach Steve Fairchild announced the Regis High School graduate underwent recent shoulder surgery.

“He probably won’t be back for spring ball, which really is a disappointment because he would have competed for a starting quarterback job,” Fairchild said. “It depends on how he rehabs. Hopefully, he’ll have a good summer, and we’ll see where he is in August.”

Fairchild said Kubiak had tried to play through the injury.

Junior Grant Stucker, who had alternated the No. 2 position on the depth chart with Kubiak, will back up starter Billy Farris against Fresno State on Saturday in the New Mexico Bowl. Former quarterback T.J. Borcky, who was moved to wide receiver during the season, will be the No. 3 quarterback.

Fairchild was in midseason scowling form even if the Rams weren’t. At one point during practice he said the receivers reverted to their spring habits, which is to say they were not catching many footballs.

However, Fairchild said, “This week we looked better than last weekend. . . . We’re starting to get it back, but we’re not there yet.”

Younger players are getting extra work before the full game preparation for Fresno State begins.

Freshman redshirt quarterback Alex Kelly continued to take a fair number of snaps.

The coaches are just starting to break down Fresno State film and hope to introduce the game plan today and Monday, weather permitting.

Tickets going fast:

CSU has sold more than 4,000 of its 6,000-seat allotment. An estimated thousand of those seats have been purchased as donations for the marching band, Albuquerque area charities and military families. Tickets remain on sale through the school’s website: .

Injury update.

There is still no determination on whether safeties Klint Kubiak (knee) or Mike Pagnotta (shoulder) will play. “It could go right up until the game,” Fairchild said.
