BOYS BASKETBALL

TJ takes third

Behind 19 points by Billy Sprague, Thomas Jefferson earned third place Saturday in the Paul Davis Classic at Green Mountain in Lakewood by handling Golden 86-73.

The Class 4A Spartans were in command from the start as 10 players scored. Ray Riley added 18 points and Chris Carter scored 12.

Golden’s Trevor Evanson led all scorers with 21 points and Alex Miller had 15.

In Sterling, Tate Mekelburg’s 19 points paced 3A’s second-ranked Platte Valley to a 64-56 defeat of third-ranked Valley in the championship game of the Northeastern Junior College Tournament.

Rayne Carlson had 15 points, Armando Gonzalez added 14 and Mitch Elrick scored 10 for Platte Valley.

For Valley, Ben Dellenbach had a game-high 23. Jarrod Huwa added 16.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Broomfield’s big

Two-time defending Class 4A champion Broomfield earned the championship of the Fairview tournament in Boulder.

Anna Prins (18 points), a 6-foot-6 senior bound for Iowa State, and Sara Hix and Chaundra Sewell (14 each) paced the Eagles.

WRESTLING

Eagles golden

Mountain Vista produced two champions while winning the Columbine Invitational.

Ryan Mooman (138 pounds) and Gabe Smith (189) paced the Golden Eagles, who also had four runners- up. Mountain Vista finished with 171 points to easily outdistance second- place Eaglecrest (122). The host Rebels were third (109.5).

Columbine (Cody Weitzel, 103, and Cosy Naeb, 215), Mitchell (Curt Barr, 152, and Caleb Metzler, 160) and Bear Creek (Delphino Aragton-Vargas, 112, and Jacob Kelly, 140) also had two individual champions.

In the Greeley Invitational, NorthRidge rolled to the team title (171.5), ahead of Windsor (139).

ICE HOCKEY

Eight is enough

Seven Regis players scored goals in an 8-0 whipping of Valor Christian at The Ice Ranch.

Mike Xavier scored twice and was joined by Tom Branson, Tom Broderick, Tyler Finn, Bobby Lucas, Austin Miller and Zeke Yslas as goal scorers. Goalie Mitch Sungelo faced only four shots.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Regis rocks

Regis outlasted Rock Canyon 455-442 at the Patriot Invitational.

Hillary Thomas (50-yard freestyle), Alex Todd (100 butterfly) and Alyssa Swanson (500 freestyle) earned first-place finishes for the Raiders.

Rock Canyon’s Jessica Holley (200 freestyle) and Kirsten Milberg (100 backstroke) also earned firsts, as did East’s Kelly Mathews (100 breaststroke), Lewis-Palmer’s Corinne Bangs (diving) and Smoky Hill’s Caroline Pehl (200 individual medley and 100 freestyle).
