Sonny Weems, assigned to the NBA Development League by the Nuggets last week, scored a game-high 20 points in less than 16 minutes in his Colorado 14ers debut, leading the team to a 129-108 victory Sunday over the Reno Bighorns at Broomfield Event Center.
Cheikh Sahm, whom the Nuggets acquired from Detroit in the Chauncey Billups trade, also debuted with the 14ers, scoring 10 points and blocking five shots off the bench. Damone Brown led Reno (1-5) with 28 points. Colorado (4-1) never trailed and led by as many as 40 points.
Steamboat’s Jewell fifth.
Steamboat Springs’ Tyler Jewell was the top American finisher, placing fifth, at the World Cup parallel giant slalom snowboarding event in Limone Piemonte, Italy. He missed the final round by 0.1 seconds. Aspen’s Chris Klug finished 14th. Canada’s Matthew Morison won the event.
Walters named CU’s MVP.
Colorado free safety Ryan Walters was voted the team’s most valuable player (Zack Jordan award) at the Buffs’ award banquet. He joins last year’s winner, linebacker Jordon Dizon, as the only defenders to win the award this decade.
