A man shot his brother to death in the Western Slope town of Rifle, police said in a news release.

Rifle police were sent out about 7:24 p.m. Monday on a report of a gunshot.

When officers arrived they found a man who told them that he had shot his brother, police said.

Heath Johnston, 20, was taken into custody and is being held on suspicion of homicide in the shooting death of 26-year-old Sam Johnston, police said.

Sam Johnston died at the shooting scene, police said.

Heath Johnston is being held without bond at the Garfield County Jail.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation and the 9th Judicial District Attorney’s Office is assisting in the investigation, police said.

Police did not disclose a motive in the shooting.
