Labor unions representing workers at The Denver Post and the Denver Newspaper Agency plan to review the books of the two organizations in response to a request to restructure existing labor contracts.

Officials of The Post and of the DNA, which handles business operations of The Post and the Rocky Mountain News, told six Denver-based unions that they seek to immediately open negotiations with the unions to negotiate $20 million in budget cuts — $18 million from the DNA and $2 million from The Post.

The cuts are needed, managers said, to allow renegotiation of $130 million in bank loans. A DNA official said in a letter to the unions that the need to negotiate is “urgent” and that new agreements are needed by Jan. 16 to facilitate the loan restructuring.
