FORT COLLINS, Colo.—A cycling group in Fort Collins is urging a ban on using cell phones while driving after the death of a 9-year-old girl.
Authorities say Erica Forney was riding her bicycle the wrong way in a bike lane on her way home from school Nov. 25 in Fort Collins when Michelle Smith’s SUV drifted into the lane and hit her. Police believe Smith was talking on her cell phone before the collision and wasn’t paying attention to the road.
The group Bike Fort Collins supports efforts by state legislators, including Democratic Rep. John Kefalas of Fort Collins, to restrict drivers to only handsfree communication devices while driving.
Authorities have issued a summons to 36-year-old Smith for careless driving resulting in the death of another.
