DENVER—Denver prosecutors say a grand jury has indicted seven people in a scam involving stolen cars, including a 1959 Cadillac convertible that once belonged to Steve McQueen.

The indictment alleges a group member would rent an expensive car, report it stolen, change the vehicle identification number and then sell it to an accomplice, who would insure the car and report it as stolen again to collect insurance money.

Prosecutors said Tuesday that victims, including insurance companies and car rental agencies, lost more than $700,000 in the scam.

Prosecutors say 44-year-old Jeffrey Earle Piper was the suspected ringleader in the enterprise, whose activity dates to 2005. The defendants face numerous charges including theft charges.
