A Colorado Springs man was found hanged last night at the Jefferson County Detention Facility and pronounced dead at around noon today, according to officials.
Eloy Medina, 29, was brought in Monday by the U.S. Marshals Service on a robbery charge, said Jefferson County Sheriff’s spokesman Jim Shires.
After dinner on Tuesday, he was seen at 6 p.m. lying in his bed. At 6:30 p.m., he was found hanging in a cell. Deputies attempted to save him with CPR and an automated external defibrillator. He was taken to St. Anthony Central Hospital and died today at 11:56 a.m.
All indications are that the man died of an apparent suicide, according to a Sheriff’s Department news release.
The sheriff and the Jefferson County coroner’s office are investigating his death.
“Federal detainees awaiting trial are customarily placed in the custody of the United States Marshals. The Marshals contract with local jail facilities to provide inmate housing,” the Marshals Service said in a news release.
