A Weld County man has been sentenced to 30 months in federal prison for failing to registers as a sex offender.
Dominic Eugene Hughes, 33, was indicted Feb. 12 on charges of failing to register. He pleaded guilty April 25 and was sentenced Tuesday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a news release.
Hughes was convicted in 1999 of sexual assault on a child in both Teller and El Paso counties. He was sentenced to consecutive terms of four and six years for the offenses.
When he was released, he was ordered to notify law enforcement of his address, as required.
He moved to North Carolina, but he was arrested Nov. 27, 2007, in Colorado; law enforcement found that he had signed a lease in Grover but failed to register with Colorado authorities.
“Convicted sex offenders are required to register regardless of where they live. If they don’t, they will be prosecuted,” U.S. Attorney for Colorado Troy Eid said in a statement.
