DENVER—The Defense Department says the three Fort Carson soldiers who died on Christmas Eve after their vehicle rolled over in Baghdad were from Michigan and Oklahoma.

Military officials identified the soldiers Friday as 28-year-old Staff Sgt. Christopher G. Smith, of Grand Rapids, Mich.; 21-year-old Spc. Stephen M. Okray of St. Clair Shores, Mich.; and 19-year-old Spc. Stephen G. Zapasnik of Broken Arrow, Okla.

All were assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 16th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.

Zapasnik’s mother, Chris Zapasnik, told the Tulsa World this week that according to her son’s company commander, the men were riding in a Humvee when part of a road collapsed, sending the vehicle into a canal.
