EAGLE, Colo.—Wildlife officers used a rope, a saw and some elbow grease to untangle two buck deer that got their antlers stuck together while fighting in a pasture near Eagle.

Brush Creek resident Cindy Cohagen noticed the entangled deer while walking her dog Dec. 18. She rushed home and called the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

Four district wildlife officers responded.

One of the officers, Bill Andree, lassoed the animals’ antlers, while the other three tackled the deer and held them still. Andree then sawed through one of the animal’s horns, allowing the bucks to get free.

Andree says deer knock heads as part of their mating behavior and often get their antlers locked together. He says the animals usually are able to free themselves, but “once in a while, they die.”
