
Friday was the first day of Kwanzaa, the African-American winter holiday that begins the day after Christmas. It celebrates unity, self- determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith. It ends Jan. 1. Here are some of the planned Denver events:
Monday
•Crafts and snacks for children, 2 p.m., in the Pauline Robinson Library, 5575 E. 33rd Ave.
•Grand Kinara lighting, 6 p.m., at East 26th Avenue and Welton Street
•Games for youths and young adults, 7 p.m., at Blackberries, 710 E. 26th Ave.
Tuesday
•Family crafts, snacks and programs, 5 p.m., at Ford-Warren Library, 2825 High St.
•Grand Kinara lighting, 6 p.m., at East 26th Avenue and Welton Street
Wednesday
•Circle of wisdom elder lunch, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., at Zion Senior Center, 5151 E. 33rd Ave. $2.50 donation suggested.
•Family Kwanzaa Karamu, 4-8 p.m., at Church of the Holy Redeemer, 2552 Williams St.
•Grand Kinara lighting, 6 p.m., at East 26th Avenue and Welton Street
•Family celebration at Brother Jeff’s Cultural Cafe, 2836 Welton St.
Thursday
•Visioning ceremony, 1-3 p.m., 2800 Locust St.
•Grand Kinara lighting, 6 p.m., at East 26th Avenue and Welton Street
