U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette withdrew her name from consideration for appointment to Colorado’s Senate seat, which will be open upon the confirmation of Sen. Ken Salazar as Secretary of the Interior.

“After serious deliberation and consultation with my family, supporters and colleagues in Congress, I have concluded I can best serve the citizens of the 1st Congressional District and Colorado from my current leadership positions in the House of Representatives,” DeGette said in a statement.

The congresswoman is the House chief deputy whip.

A decision from Gov. Bill Ritter, who will select the next senator, is expected soon.
