Cleanup on Aisle 7. Few holiday parties can avoid mess-ups like spilled red wine and hot candle wax dripped on the carpet. Nourison Industries offers these tips on how to clean carpets using everyday products:

Be gentle: Handle your rugs carefully, don’t scrub. Gently blotting at the stain with a damp cloth is the best way to get the stain out without soaking through to the carpet pad or ruining the carpet fibers.

Home remedy: Use detergent or white vinegar, or both, for spots or stains such as alcohol, beer, blood, candy, chewing gum, chocolate, cosmetics, crayons, eggs, fruit juice, gravy, ice cream, lipstick, mud, mustard, salad dressing, tea and wine.

For cigarette burns: Rub the pile gently with the edge of a hard and flat surface. Scrape towards the center before lifting up soot so you don’t spread the stain.

To remove wax, fat or oil: Layer a paper towel over carpet and go over with a warm iron so the substance will stick to the tissue.

To remove glue: Moisten a cotton ball or soft cloth with rubbing alcohol and hold it over the soiled area. Once the residue is thoroughly moistened, gently wipe the glue residue off. Repeat the process until the glue is completely removed.

Green plastic bags, finally. We don’t have to feel guilty about throwing away plastic bags any longer. Perf Go Green has developed biodegradable trash bags and other sacks that will break down into water, carbon dioxide and bio- mass in two years instead of clogging up landfills. Products available now include a 13-gallon tall kitchen bag, 30-gallon lawn and leaf bags, kitty litter and doggie-duty bags. Look for food storage and checkout bags available next year.
