The Broncos have added a sixth person to their head coaching candidate list.
This time it’s one of their own — Rick Dennison, the Broncos’ offensive coordinator.
Dennison will formerly interview for the position Wednesday.
The Broncos also have received permission from the Dallas Cowboys to interview offensive coordinator Jason Garrett.
The Broncos’ short list of candidates now has a blend of two defensive coordinators, two offensive coordinators, coaches with vast NFL experience, coaches who are considered young by NFL standards and Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, who has no NFL experience, but is one of the most successful college coaches in the country.
Garrett, 42, joins New England’s Josh McDaniels, 32, as the offensive coordinators who have drawn the Broncos’ interest. The defensive coordinators who will interview with the Broncos are the New York Giants’ Steve Spagnuolo, 49, and Tampa Bay’s Raheem Morris, 32.
Garrett and Spagnuolo have been considered the most sought-after head coaching candidates of the past two years. Both turned down NFL coaching offers last year – Garrett with the Baltimore Ravens and Atlanta Falcons and Spagnuolo with the Washington Redskins.
The Broncos will interview Spagnuolo on Saturday night in the New York area, McDaniels on Sunday in the Boston area, Morris on Wednesday in Denver and Garrett sometime next week.
Garrett was a highly respected assistant coach after the Cowboys recorded a 13-3 regular-season record in 2007. Last January, the Cowboys promoted Garrett to assistant head coach and gave him a new contract that paid him approximately $3 million per year. Garrett earlier had interviewed for the head coaching jobs with the Falcons and Ravens.
Garrett was a quarterback with the Cowboys from 1993-99, and had later stops with the New York Giants, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami Dolphins during his NFL career. He started his NFL coaching career in 2005 as quarterbacks coach for the Dolphins, who were coached by Nick Saban, and remained in that job for two seasons until taking over as the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator.
