Charles Barkley is headed to Denver on Jan. 13 as part of the Insight Speakers Series at Wells Fargo Theatre. So what will he have to say for himself?
Seems Barkley was picked up on a DUI charge in Phoenix early Wednesday morning. He had been partying at Dirty Pretty Rock Bar with a group of pals, including Jaleel White, the guy who played Urkel in “Family Matters.”
printed a copy of the bar bill Barkley picked up — $1,800 plus a $360 tip.
The Arizona Republic reports that Barkley stopped the car to pick up a woman and then explained to the police that he ran a stop sign because he was in a hurry to be with the woman for, er, some private business.
In a statement, Barkley said he was “disappointed that I put myself in this situation,” adding, “the Scottsdale police were fantastic.”
Local promoter Elizabeth Weiland doesn’t know how the episode will affect Denver ticket sales. I say they’ll go up. “It’s a challenge,” she says. “We shall see.”
To go.
Tuesday, the day Mike Shanahan got the word that he was out as Broncos coach, he decided to stay home with his family — and order out Chinese. Jing is the closest, best joint to his house so that’s where they called for take-out.
Jing partner Mike Ditchfield and GM Lawrence Yee put together some Chinese comfort food and drove it over to the Shanahan house — and they threw in a bottle of Taittinger Champagne so the family could “toast the future.”
Ivana stays home.
Despite the bomb threats that shut down Aspen on New Year’s Eve, Niche Media’s Jason and Haley Binn went ahead with their annual party at the Hotel Jerome.
It’s usually co-hosted by a bold name or two, and this year it was skedded to be Ivana Trump. But she dropped out of the party “due to the nature of the evening,” says a Niche publicist. “Although Ivana opted not to go out to ring in the New Year, the incident wasn’t enough to (deter) other guests from heading back to the Hotel Jerome to celebrate the end of 2008.”
And the very swank and private Caribou Club was unable to open at all. “We were too close to the core,” said a receptionist Thursday.
Take that.
With all the commotion in Aspen, people may have missed this item from the Aspen Daily News:
“Aspen police charged Fredric A. Bourke with physical harassment on Monday after he allegedly punched a woman on the Rio Grande Trail on Dec. 16 after an altercation between their dogs.
“Bourke, 62, has a home on Red Mountain and is co-founder of Dooney and Bourke, a handbag and fashion accessory company.”
