DENVER—Everett Sheen had a pair of goals Friday as Holy Cross skated to a 2-2 tie with No. 5 Denver in the first round of the Wells Fargo Denver Cup. The Pioneers won the ensuing unofficial shootout to advance to the championship game of their annual tournament.

Jesse Martin and Kyle Ostrow scored one goal each for Denver (13-5-2 overall, 9-4-1 WCHA) during regulation, while Marc Cheverie stopped 17 shots in goal.

Adam Roy blocked 35 shots for Holy Cross (5-11-2, 5-8-1 AH).

Overtime concluded with a tie, so the game went into a 3-on-3 shootout to determine who would advance to the next round.

Roy allowed 4-of-5 shots past him but defended a shot by Ostrow, leading to a 2-2 tie and sending out Joe Colborne, Denver’s fourth player.

Anthony Maiani finished it 5-4 with the game-winning goal for the Pioneers as Sheen failed to get his past Cheverie.

Denver on Saturday faces No. 3 Boston University, which downed RPI 6-2 on Friday.
