COLORADO SPRINGS — A District Court jury has convicted a 25-year-old man of starting an apartment fire that killed two people in Colorado Springs.

Jurors deliberated for about 10 hours over three days before finding Derrick “Nicky” Johnson of Fountain guilty Friday of two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted murder, first-degree arson and felony menacing.

Johnson faces life in prison without parole when he is sentenced Jan. 30.

Prosecutors say that on Jan. 16, 2007, Johnson was angry with his girlfriend and poured gasoline in the hallway outside the apartment where she was staying and lit it.

The blaze destroyed the building and killed 52-year-old Joe Santoyo and 32-year-old Clemente Perez Salgado.
