DENVER—The Denver Board of Education is wasting no time in finding a new superintendent.

Board members met behind closed doors Saturday to come up with a plan to find a successor to current superintendent Michael Bennet. The meeting came just three hours after Gov. Bill Ritter announced he had picked Bennet to replace Democrat Ken Salazar in the U.S. Senate.

Board spokesman Alex Sanchez said the meeting will resume Sunday at noon. It will also be closed to the public.

In a statement, board members said they would be working with the administration on a transition plan over the next several days. They also said they’re committed to continuing Bennet’s reforms in the school system.

Bennet wooed teachers to a merit play plan they’d opposed for years and also closed struggling schools.
