MIAMI — Bill Parcells is staying with the Miami Dolphins, owner Wayne Huizenga said.

After the team’s playoff loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, Huizenga said Parcells has decided to remain for another season.

Parcells’ contract allows him to leave and still receive the $9 million to $12 million remaining on his four-year contract if the franchise is sold. That sale is expected to be completed soon. Huizenga said Parcells told him Friday he plans to remain as executive vice president of football operations.

Mike Smith of the Atlanta Falcons edged Tony Sparano of the Miami Dolphins by one vote for 2008 coach of the year award.

Bill Cowher said he doesn’t plan to coach next year and will stay with CBS Sports as a studio analyst.

Vonn loses her overall lead

ZAGREB, Croatia — With the finish and the victory literally in sight, Lindsey Vonn made a costly error.

The 24-year-old American crashed just five gates before the finish on an icy slalom course, losing a likely victory and the overall lead in the World Cup standings.

Maria Riesch of Germany finished in a combined time of 1 minute, 58.69 seconds to win her third straight slalom and take the lead in the standings.

• Austrian Nicole Hosp, the 2007 giant slalom world champion, is out for six weeks after injuring her left knee Sunday.

Demong on World Cup podium

SCHONACH, Germany — American Bill Demong finished second in a nordic combined World Cup event, giving him his third podium finish of the season and moving him up to second in the overall standings behind winner Anssi Koivuranta of Finland.

Demong, of Vermontville, N.Y., placed 18th in the jumping segment of the competition but was second fastest in the 10-kilometer cross country race after teammate Johnny Spillane of Steamboat Springs. Spillane was 12th overall and Todd Lodwick, also of Steamboat Springs, placed 14th.

Bobsled titles decided

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — John Napier and Bree Schaaf won the U.S. National Bobsled Championships and qualified for the world championships.

Napier and brakeman Cory Butner won in 3:45.87 in the four-heat race. In the women’s race, Schaaf and brakewoman Emily Azevedo won in 3:51.98.
