Three juveniles are in custody this morning after apparently stealing a Ford Expedition, crashing it and fleeing from officers last night.
An officer fired his weapon at one of the juvenile suspects; no one was hit, Aurora police said in a news release.
The incident started just after 8 p.m. when an Aurora officer in a patrol car saw a stolen Expedition near the intersection of South Sable Boulevard and East Exposition Avenue.
The officer followed the SUV, alerted dispatchers, then turned on his lights to make a stop, the release said.
The driver of the Expedition took off north on Potomac. He lost control turning onto East Sixth Avenue, hitting several other vehicles in the process.
The officer in the patrol car didn’t chase the SUV but followed “from a distance,” the release said.
He and other officers came upon the scene as the three people left the Expedition and ran away. Two ran behind a gas station and were quickly caught.
The third suspect ran into a neighborhood. An officer fired at him as he ran through a backyard. The round missed, and he was taken into custody, as well.
Detectives believe all three suspects are juveniles, the release said, and their names were not released.
“The officer who discharged his duty weapon has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal review of this incident,” the release said. He has been with Aurora police for 2-1/2 years.
Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Craig Appel at 303-739-6207.
